Hindsight a Decade Later – The Countdown Begins

age quoteIt seemed like a great idea.

I was about to turn 30, and I wanted to approach the Winnipeg Free Press pitch a daily column: “Thirty days until thirty.”

A countdown until I hit the big 3-0.

It seems like yesterday since I hatched the idea at 29.

In April, I turn 40. So call this a 45 days until 40.

Does turning 40 bother me? No. I look at life differently. There are people who never turned 25 or 30, let alone 40. I’m simply gaining a year.

My 30s were about self-discovery. Figuring out who I am. I discovered my life didn’t end at 32 – and it sure didn’t end at 39. I accomplished more in the last decade than I had in my 20s.

But “accomplishment” isn’t about skydiving and climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to prove to others you have a life. In fact, it’s not about proving anything.

goalsIt’s about learning to impress yourself. Pushing yourself to accomplish your goals. Forgetting the naysayers who told you to give up and having the kahunas to forage on.

Needless to say, this will be a journal of advice and humour events in my life. Because as the saying goes in my house, “You just can’t make this s*** up.”

However, the internet isn’t my personal diary, which I’ve kept since I was 10 years old. I feel it’s important to certain aspects private. Besides that, I’m an open book.

February 29. We won’t see another leap year until 2020.

Funny, isn’t it? It’s like hindsight.
